Solved

Created a toolbar button with this code:
@SetField("$ICAL_COMPATIBILITY_MODE";0)

Opened up the first meeting in Edit mode, clicked the button, saved the doc.

Deleted the doc and was given the usual 4 choices. Selected "This instance and all future instances".

Thanks to all for the clues.
